HP EliteBook / ProBook USB-C charger wattage

Most HP EliteBook and ProBook laptops (EliteBook 840 G11, 860 G11, 8 G1i; ProBook 440 G11) charge from a 65W USB-C charger. Pick 100W if your brick says 100W — ProBook 440 G11 with RTX 2050 graphics, or a 76 Wh EliteBook 860 G11.

Full answer

HP’s own QuickSpecs list USB Type-C adapters for current EliteBook and ProBook business laptops, all at a nominal 20 V. The EliteBook 840 G11 lists only 65 W USB-C adapters (max operating power 65 W). The EliteBook 8 G1i 14 lists four 65 W USB-C types plus a 100 W Slim USB-C adapter (max operating power 65 W). The EliteBook 860 G11 datasheet lists 65 W USB-C and a 100 W slim USB-C adapter. The ProBook 440 G11 lists 45 W, 65 W and 100 W USB-C adapters, with max operating power 65 W on integrated (UMA) graphics and 100 W with discrete graphics.

So a 65W USB-C PD charger is the match for most of these laptops. Choose 100W if the brick you lost says 100 W, if your ProBook 440 G11 has NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2050 graphics, or if you want HP Fast Charge speed on a bigger battery: HP’s footnotes say fast charge (50% in about 30 minutes, system off) needs a 65 W adapter for batteries of 56 Wh or less and 100 W for batteries over 56 Wh and under 83 Wh — that covers the 860 G11’s 76 Wh option and the 8 G1i’s 62 Wh battery. A 45 W charger is only HP’s minimum for first startup on the ProBook 440 G11; it charges slowly. For 100 W use a 5A e-marked USB-C cable. Older and other HP models: HP USB-C (Envy / EliteBook); mobile workstations: HP ZBook; Chromebooks: HP Chromebook. Full method: how to pick.
