MacBook Air M3 charger: which wattage to buy

MacBook Air (M3, 2024) ships with Apple’s 30W or 35W USB-C adapter, so any 35W-or-higher USB-C PD charger replaces it — a 65W one with room to spare. For Apple’s fast charge (about 50% in 30 minutes), get 70W or more.

Full answer

Apple’s tech specs for the 13-inch MacBook Air (M3, 2024) list a 30W USB-C Power Adapter in the box with the 8-core GPU model and a 35W Dual USB-C Port Compact Power Adapter with the 10-core GPU and 512GB storage model. The 15-inch MacBook Air (M3, 2024) ships with the 35W Dual USB-C Port Compact Power Adapter. Every model comes with a USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable (2 m), and both pages say “Fast-charge capable with 70W USB-C Power Adapter.”

So a USB-C PD charger of 35W or more matches what came in the box, a 65W charger is a comfortable spare, and a 70W, 100W or bigger USB-C PD charger is the fast-charge class. MagSafe 3 and both Thunderbolt / USB 4 (USB-C) ports accept charging. A higher-watt USB-C PD charger is safe — the Mac only draws what it needs. Have the newer M4 or M5 model? Fast charge (70W and up)

Fast charge on MacBook Air (M3)

Apple’s fast-charge article (102378) says MacBook Air models from 2022 or later reach up to 50% in around 30 minutes with a 70W, 96W or 140W USB-C Power Adapter and either the USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable or a USB-C charge cable; the 67W USB-C Power Adapter is listed for 13.6-inch models only (the 13-inch M3 Air has a 13.6-inch display). Neither the in-box 30W nor the 35W adapter is on that list.

A 65W charger still charges the M3 Air normally (it is well above the 30W or 35W in-box adapter); it just isn’t in Apple’s fast-charge list. Apple doesn’t name third-party chargers; a 100W USB-C PD charger delivers more than the 70W Apple lists.
