MacBook Pro 16 M5 charger: which wattage to buy

MacBook Pro (16-inch, M5 Pro or M5 Max, 2026) ships with Apple’s 140W USB-C Power Adapter and a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable, and Apple lists fast charge with a 140W or higher USB PD power source. The 2024 M4 Pro / M4 Max 16-inch uses the same 140W adapter — so buy 140W.

Full answer

Apple’s tech specs for the 16-inch MacBook Pro (M5 Pro or M5 Max) list a 140W USB-C Power Adapter and a USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable (2 m) in the box for both chips, a 100 watt-hour battery, and “Fast-charge capable with 140W or higher USB PD power source.” The 16-inch MacBook Pro (2024, M4 Pro or M4 Max) specs list the same 140W adapter and MagSafe 3 cable and say fast-charge capable with the included 140W adapter. Apple says fast charge gets these models to 50 percent in around 30 minutes.

So the match is a 140W USB-C PD charger that can put 140W through one port (USB PD 3.1, 28V). Apple also says any USB-C PD adapter can charge the Mac, even a lower-watt one — it just charges more slowly, and below 140W you lose fast charge. A higher-watt USB-C PD charger is safe; the Mac only draws what it needs. Older all-years page: MacBook Pro 16 140W charger. Method for any laptop: how to pick.

Fast charge (140W and up)

Fast charge on MacBook Pro 16 (M5 / M4)

Apple’s fast-charge article (102378) lists two combinations for the 16-inch MacBook Pro (2021 or later): the 140W USB-C Power Adapter + USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable, or the 140W USB-C Power Adapter + 240W USB-C Charge Cable for MacBook Pro (16-inch, Nov 2023) or later. Apple’s M5 Pro / M5 Max testing used the 140W adapter (Model A2452) with the MagSafe 3 cable (Model A2363).

Apple doesn’t name third-party chargers. For a non-Apple brick, check that a single USB-C port is rated 140W (28V⎓5A); multi-port chargers split power when more than one device is plugged in.
