MacBook Air M5 charger: which wattage to buy

MacBook Air (M5, 13- and 15-inch) ships with Apple’s 40W Dynamic Power Adapter (60W max), so any 65W USB-C PD charger replaces it. For Apple’s fast charge (about 50% in 30 minutes), get 70W or more.

Full answer

Apple’s tech specs for the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air with M5 list the same power gear for every standard model: a 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max and a USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable (2 m) in the box, and “Fast-charge capable with 70W or higher USB PD power source.” Apple also offers the 35W Dual USB-C Port Compact Power Adapter or the 70W USB-C Power Adapter as build-to-order options.

So a 65W USB-C PD charger covers what the in-box adapter can deliver, and a 70W, 100W or bigger USB-C PD charger unlocks Apple’s fast charge. MagSafe 3 and both Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports accept charging. A higher-watt USB-C PD charger is safe — the Mac only draws what it needs. Method for any laptop: how to pick.

Fast charge (70W and up)

Fast charge on MacBook Air (M5)

Apple’s fast-charge article (102378) says MacBook Air models from 2022 or later reach up to 50% in around 30 minutes with a 70W, 96W or 140W USB-C Power Adapter and either the USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable or a USB-C charge cable (the 67W adapter is listed for 13.6-inch models only). Apple’s January 2026 test of the M5 Air used its 70W USB-C Power Adapter (Model A2743) with the MagSafe 3 cable (Model A2363). The M5 spec page words it as a 70W or higher USB PD power source, so a third-party 100W USB-C PD charger also qualifies.

A 65W charger still charges the M5 Air normally (it is above the in-box adapter’s 60W max); it just isn’t in Apple’s fast-charge list.
