iPhone 15 charger: which wattage to buy

Every iPhone 15 model (15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max) fast charges from any 20W-or-higher USB-C PD charger — Apple puts only a USB-C cable in the box, no adapter. A 30W charger costs about the same and covers MagSafe’s 15W max too.

Full answer

Apple’s tech specs for all four iPhone 15 models say the same thing: fast-charge capable, up to 50% charge in around 30 minutes with a 20W adapter or higher (available separately) paired with a USB‑C cable. Apple’s “Fast charge your iPhone” page adds that an iPhone 15 or later fast charges with an Apple 18W-or-greater USB-C Power Adapter, or a comparable third-party USB-C power adapter that supports USB Power Delivery (USB-PD).

So the right buy is a USB-C PD charger rated 20W or more. A 30W charger is our recommended tier: the 30W bricks above cost about the same as a 20W one, cover Apple’s 20W spec with headroom, and are more than enough for a MagSafe Charger (iPhone 15 MagSafe tops out at 15W). A 45W charger also works (“20W or higher”) and can top up an iPad or small laptop too. Skip old 5W USB-A cubes — they don’t fast charge and need a USB-A cable. All iPhone 15 models use USB-C (not Lightning), so the cable in the box plugs straight into any of these chargers.

What’s in the box (no charger)

What’s in the iPhone 15 box

Apple’s spec pages list the iPhone, a USB-C Charge Cable (1 m) and documentation — nothing else. In Apple’s words, iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus (and likewise iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max) “do not include a power adapter or EarPods. Included in the box is a USB‑C Charge Cable that supports fast charging and is compatible with USB‑C power adapters and computer ports.” So you need to buy the wall charger separately; any of the chargers above plugs straight into that cable.

Fast charge and MagSafe

Fast charging iPhone 15

Wired: 20W or higher USB-C PD gets an iPhone 15 to about 50% in around 30 minutes (Apple tested with its 20W USB-C Power Adapter, Model A2305). Apple’s spec says “20W adapter or higher,” so a 30W or 45W USB-C PD charger is fine; a bigger one is handy if you also charge an iPad or laptop.

MagSafe / wireless: all four iPhone 15 models support MagSafe wireless charging up to 15W and Qi2 up to 15W (Qi up to 7.5W). Apple’s fast-charge page says iPhone 15 and earlier fast charge up to 15W with a MagSafe Charger and an Apple 20W or greater USB-C adapter, or a comparable third-party USB-PD adapter — so the 30W bricks above are plenty. The MagSafe Charger itself is sold separately; we don’t list a price for it here yet.

Which cable

The right cable

All four iPhone 15 models have a USB-C connector (Apple spec pages), so use a USB-C to USB-C cable. The 1 m cable in the box supports fast charging, so most people don’t need another. Any USB-C to USB-C cable rated 60W (3A) handles iPhone 15 charging with room to spare; a 240W cable like Apple’s 2 m one above also works if you want a longer spare. Old Lightning cables don’t fit iPhone 15.

Data note: iPhone 15 / 15 Plus transfer data at USB 2 speed (up to 480Mb/s); iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max reach USB 3 speeds (up to 10Gb/s) only with a USB 3 cable rated 10Gb/s (Apple spec footnote). This doesn’t affect charging speed.
