iPhone 17 charger: which wattage to buy
iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max fast charge to about 50% in 20 minutes with a 40W-or-higher USB-C charger, and iPhone Air and iPhone 17e fast charge from 20W — Apple puts only a USB-C cable in the box, no adapter. A 45W USB-C PD charger covers every model.

Full answer
Apple’s tech specs for iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max say: fast-charge capable, up to 50% in about 20 minutes with a 40W adapter or higher paired with a USB‑C cable, or up to 50% in about 30 minutes with a 30W adapter or higher paired with a MagSafe Charger. iPhone Air and iPhone 17e are rated lower: up to 50% in about 30 minutes with a 20W adapter or higher. Apple’s “Fast charge your iPhone” page groups them the same way (40W or higher for iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max; 20W or higher for iPhone 17e and iPhone Air).
So the right buy for most iPhone 17 owners is a USB-C PD charger rated 40W or more. A 45W charger is our recommended tier: it meets the 40W spec with a little headroom, costs about the same as a smaller brick, and also fast charges iPhone Air and 17e. A 30W charger is enough for iPhone Air or iPhone 17e and runs a MagSafe Charger at full speed, but it won’t hit Apple’s 20-minute figure on iPhone 17 / 17 Pro / 17 Pro Max. A higher-watt USB-C PD charger is safe — the phone only draws what it needs. Every iPhone 17 model uses USB-C, so the cable in the box plugs straight into any of these chargers.

Apple’s iPhone 17 / 17 Pro / 17 Pro Max / Air fast-charge tests used the USB-C Charge Cable with the Apple 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max (Model A3351), and MagSafe Chargers (Models A3502 / A3503) with the Apple 30W USB-C Power Adapter (Model A2164) or the 40W Dynamic Power Adapter; the iPhone Air and iPhone 17e 20W figures were tested with the Apple 20W USB-C Power Adapter (Model A2305).
On 10 Oct 2026 Apple’s iPhone lineup page lists iPhone Air, iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e (iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max have been replaced there by iPhone 18 Pro); the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max specs above are from Apple Support’s Tech Specs pages.
What’s in the box (no charger)
What’s in the iPhone 17 box
Apple’s spec pages list the iPhone, a USB-C Charge Cable (1 m) and documentation for every model. In Apple’s words, iPhone 17 “does not include a power adapter or EarPods. Included in the box is a USB‑C Charge Cable that supports fast charging and is compatible with USB‑C power adapters and computer ports.” iPhone 17 Pro / Pro Max and iPhone Air pages say the same. So you buy the wall charger separately; any charger above plugs straight into that cable.
Fast charge (40W and up)
Fast charge on iPhone 17
Apple’s 50%-in-about-20-minutes figure for iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max comes from tests with the USB-C Charge Cable and Apple’s 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max (Model A3351). The spec pages word it as “40W adapter or higher”, so a third-party 45W or 65W USB-C PD charger is the matching class. A 20W or 30W charger still charges iPhone 17 — just not at that headline speed. iPhone Air and iPhone 17e reach about 50% in 30 minutes from a 20W adapter or higher (Apple tested with its 20W USB-C Power Adapter, Model A2305).
Apple notes charge time varies with adapter, settings, usage and temperature; fast charging might not work when the phone is too cold or too hot.
MagSafe and wireless charging
MagSafe on iPhone 17
iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max support MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W; iPhone Air up to 20W; iPhone 17e up to 15W. For MagSafe fast charging (iPhone 17 / Pro / Pro Max: about 50% in 30 minutes), Apple says to plug the MagSafe Charger into a 30W adapter or higher; Apple tested with MagSafe Chargers (1 m Model A3502, 2 m Model A3503) on its 30W USB-C Power Adapter or 40W Dynamic Power Adapter. Any 30W-or-higher charger above works for that. The MagSafe Charger itself is sold separately; we don’t list a price for it here yet.
Which cable
The right cable
Use a USB-C to USB-C cable. The 1 m cable in the box supports fast charging, so most people don’t need another. A USB-C to USB-C cable rated 60W (3A) or more handles a 40W or 45W charger; Apple’s 240W 2 m cable above also works if you want a longer spare. Lightning cables don’t fit any iPhone 17 model.
Data note: iPhone 17 Pro / Pro Max transfer data at USB 3 speeds (up to 10Gb/s) with a USB 3 cable; iPhone 17, iPhone Air and iPhone 17e are USB 2 (480Mb/s). This doesn’t affect charging speed.
