iPhone 16 charger: which wattage to buy

Every iPhone 16 model (16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max) fast charges from any 20W-or-higher USB-C PD charger — Apple puts only a USB-C cable in the box, no adapter. Get 30W if you want headroom or use a MagSafe Charger (Apple’s 25W MagSafe speed needs a 30W adapter).

Full answer

Apple’s tech specs for all four iPhone 16 models say the same thing: fast-charge capable, up to 50% in about 30 minutes with a 20W adapter or higher paired with a USB‑C cable, or a 30W adapter or higher paired with a MagSafe Charger. Apple’s “Fast charge your iPhone” page adds that for iPhone 15 or later any Apple 18W-or-greater USB-C adapter, or a comparable third-party USB-C adapter that supports USB Power Delivery (USB-PD), will fast charge.

So the right buy is a USB-C PD charger rated 20W or more. A 30W charger is our recommended tier: it costs about the same as a 20W brick, covers Apple’s 20W fast-charge spec with headroom, and is the minimum Apple lists for 25W MagSafe charging. A 45W charger also works (“20W or higher”) and can top up an iPad or small laptop too. Skip old 5W USB-A cubes — they don’t fast charge and need a USB-A cable. All iPhone 16 models use USB-C, so the cable in the box plugs straight into any of these chargers.

Apple’s fast-charge tests used the Apple 20W USB-C Power Adapter (Model A2305) with the USB-C Charge Cable, and MagSafe Chargers (Models A2580 / A3250) with the Apple 30W USB-C Power Adapter (Model A2164).

What’s in the box (no charger)

What’s in the iPhone 16 box

Apple’s spec pages list the iPhone, a USB-C Charge Cable (1 m) and documentation — nothing else. In Apple’s words, iPhone 16 models “do not include a power adapter or EarPods. Included in the box is a USB‑C Charge Cable that supports fast charging and is compatible with USB‑C power adapters and computer ports.” So you need to buy the wall charger separately; any of the chargers above plugs straight into that cable.

MagSafe and wireless charging

MagSafe on iPhone 16

All four iPhone 16 models support MagSafe wireless charging up to 25W, but only with a MagSafe Charger plugged into a 30W adapter or higher (Apple tested with its 30W USB-C Power Adapter, Model A2164). A 20W brick is fine for wired fast charging but will not give full MagSafe speed. If you plan to charge on a MagSafe puck, buy 30W or more. The MagSafe Charger itself is sold separately; we don’t list a price for it here yet.

Apple’s current spec pages list Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W on iPhone 16 / 16 Plus and up to 15W on iPhone 16 Pro / Pro Max.

Which cable

The right cable

Use a USB-C to USB-C cable. The 1 m cable in the box supports fast charging, so most people don’t need another. Any USB-C to USB-C cable rated 60W (3A) handles iPhone 16 charging with room to spare; a 240W cable like Apple’s 2 m one above also works if you want a longer spare. Lightning cables and USB-A to Lightning cables don’t fit iPhone 16.

Data note: the in-box cable is a charge cable. iPhone 16 Pro / Pro Max transfer data at USB 3 speeds (up to 10Gb/s) only with a USB 3 cable; iPhone 16 / 16 Plus are USB 2 (480Mb/s). This doesn’t affect charging speed.
